Can elocution lessons help me acquire a full standard american accent?

Reasons why I need to get rid of my accent

- interview

-speech|||If you are over the age of about 12 or 13, when you learn another language, you will always have at least some "accent."

"It is acceptable, but not as good as I once thought it should be. The thought of “losing my accent” (or “overcoming” it, some might say) swirled around my head for many years in the 1970s and 80s. Regrettably, I never got around to it. Speaking with an accent, you know, is essentially inevitable when you learn to speak the second language after puberty. "

I've been in the "language-teaching business" for almost 30 years now, and this fact is common knowledge among those in my field. The cut-off period (around age 13) is sometimes called "hitting the Chomsky Button" since it was the renowned linguist Noah Chomsky who first documented this.

But, on the positive side, why do you think you NEED to acquire a "full, standard American accent?"

Most people find listening to accented English to be a pleasant and interesting experience.|||Elocution probably won't help you. If you have an accent already, it is difficult to lose it.

The Pimsleur language tapes use a system of listen/repeat to get new speakers to speak like a native (that is, with a native accent) for various languages.

I would suggest that you pick a specific american accent and listen/repeat as much audio dialog from that accent as you can.|||I don't know if it works for American.

The English can always recognise if someone has had Elocution lessons. It sounds so false|||Yes proper and sincere practice will help you achieve your goal,whatever it may be.

What is the best packaged gas/electric HVAC: Heil, Trane, Lennox, Carrier, Amana, Goodman, American Standard?

Would you please tell me which one of the following brands (or one I have not listed) is best for a gas pack (packaged gas/electric HVAC unit) and if there is something negative about them I should know?

Heil, Trane, Lennox, Carrier, Amana, Goodman, American Standard

Thank you.

Also, where are they made?|||It should not be a question on who's the best. Rather which manufacture have the better contractor in your area. For example; you buy a Trane, and the nearest contractor is fifty miles away. Which means that you will have a huge travel charge and the contractor may need to make another trip out to you with the part needed and this could take days.

You asked about the best gas\pak? My answer is the one with the best customer service.|||Go with a Carrier Infinity system, which uses Puron (an environmentally friendly refrigerant) and has Hybridheat technology. It is the best on the market. Is $3200 for an American Standard Freedom 90 two stage varialbe speed furnace a reasonable price?

If that's the installed price, it's a fair one, I'd jump on it. Two stage and variable speed furnaces always cost a bit more, a single speed of the same size would cost you between $2700 and $3000. American Standard and Trane are top of the line. You can get cheaper, like a Goodman product, but you get what you pay for.|||installed? that's high.|||If you live in Denver, I can do it for cheaper!|||Yes, after instillation, this is a great price. Many furnaces cost over $4500.00 to replace - including the labor for instillation.|||As an "installed price", yes.|||To provide and intall yes.|||Depend's on What Size it is and What else Is being done like Duct work any Air Cleaners?

Do Chicagoans realize they have an accent different from Standard American?

Chicagoans have (from what I can tell) about three distinct accents (other than African American and Hispanic accents.)

They sound nothing like what is considered "Standard American" like what one hears usually in the movies or on TV.

I live in Chicago and being from The South I am aware of my accent but I find Chicagoans don't realize I could pick their accents out of a crowd. I can tell who here is native and who isn't.

Just interesting I think. Chicago? What do you think?|||Yes Im from burbs of Illinois and I notice that Chicago accent it sounds kind of nasally|||Many areas in America have distinctive accents.

Most natives of places that have these accents don't realize it because everyone else sounds like them. Just like where you're from.

I don't think this is just a "Chicago" thing

Its everywhere. America is a melting pot. There is no "Standard American" accent|||Don't know about Chicago, but in Texas the thick "Texas" accents are from the people who arrived recently. "Why" is a mystery the natives wonder about frequently.|||wow! i always wanted a accent that people could notice...... i am flattered. go chicago baby!|||I can tell a Chicago accent, too. You just gave me an idea look for the question I'm going to post.

I have a hot water extractor that uses 19 amps with a standard american 110 outlet plug?

It keeps tripping the breaker, so what type of converter should I buy to avoid this and the most inexpensive one? Could I use an extension cord with this and which kind if possible? Any help would be appreciated!|||Harvey is exactly correct. Most American 110 volt outlets are rated for 15 amps, and wired with #14 romex wire, which is rated to carry 15 amps. 19 is more than 15 so you need the larger circuit, wire, recept, breaker and all. I'm curious to know what a hot water extractor is.|||You need a 25 amp or greater dedicated line.

New breaker, new wire (thicker than the stuff that's already there)

Someone to install it properly.

Someone to fix it if you didn't heed the last word of the previous step.

American Standard thermostat adjust fan?

I have an American Standard thermostat model acont800 hooked up to my heat pump and the fan is running way too much. The thermostat fan mode is set to auto, and the fan even continues to run while heat pump is in defrost mode which blows very cold air out of registers. Does anyone know how to make an adjustment so fan will not run in defrost mode? Thanks in advance!|||It is supposed to run in defrost mode. You should have an aux. heat strip to provide heat during defrost. Try switching to aux heat to see if there is a problem with you strip. If you do not have one you are just going to get cold air in defrost.|||It's not the thermostat causing the problem. Most likely the system isn't wired properly and needs checked by a dealer.

Actors and Singers with American Standard English?

Hi. I need to find a list of celebrities who uses Standard American English when they speak. Unfortunately, being a non-native english speaker, It's not an easy task for me. Please help. Thanks! :)|||You know, most songs are poetic, therefore NOT grammatically correct.

And among actors? I think you should go to Canada for that!

I can't even find a decent Brit to speak correctly!

And Americans are atrocious! It is cool to speak incorrectly, especially among the young, and they grow up, and don't remember any of the rules!

Intelligent answers welcome.|||Here is a graph of when people got new technologies in the 20th century, Electricity was also a big one that made many others possible, but that was long ago. Air conditioning only makes my list because where I live it does not cool off much at night.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the frutarian diet as opposed to the standard american diet?

Fruitarianism: Pro

* fruit is widely regarded as the best tasting raw food, and eating fruit is very pleasant indeed - after all, we all like sugar! :-)

* it is a very cleansing diet, and may be helpful (in the short run) against diseases/disorders where physical toxemia is a factor (note: this applies to other raw foods diets as well; the point is that fruitarianism is probably the most cleansing diet)

* fruit, if it is grown locally and not shipped, refrigerated, fumigated, subjected to heat/cold treatment to kill fruit flies, etc., is a low violence food. However, shipping fruit, refrigerating it, etc. do involve violence to the environment; fruit subjected to such treatment cannot be considered a low violence food. In other words, most fruit is neither violence-free nor karma- free.

* promotes weight loss and gives you a light body

* fruitarianism alters your mental state, promoting a light and airy mental feeling that some find quite pleasant. Some interpret this as a "spiritual" feeling.

* can promote extraordinary physical health - you *appear* to be (relatively) immune to illness (at least in the short run), and injuries heal very quickly. This, combined with the "light" mental effect, makes it *appear* that you are experiencing a higher state of living.

* your respiratory system may function better than on other (cooked) diets, though only slightly better (or same) as other raw diets

* it can sharpen your senses to an extraordinary degree, especially the senses of taste and smell. Your sense of smell may get so sharp that it is emotionally painful to sit in the same room with someone who is a garlic eater, or one who smells of tobacco (you simply can't stand the stench).

* reduces the amount of water you need to drink (as fruit is high in water)

Fruitarianism: Con

* modern fruit is expensive, lacking in vitality and quality as a result of shipping, refrigeration, fumigation, etc. The importance of year-round access to good quality local fruit limits the applicability of fruitarianism.

* fruitarians usually experience severe weight loss, with weight stabilizing at anorexic levels. It is extremely difficult to gain weight on a fruit diet, even if you overeat avocados.

* advocates of fruitarianism claim that anyone can succeed on their ideal, natural fruitarian diet if they have faith or positive thinking. This is a contradiction: does the cow need faith to succeed on diet of grass? Does the lion need positive thinking to succeed on a diet of zebra, antelope, and wildebeest meat? Of course not! If you need faith to succeed, it is probably not the "ideal, natural" diet as claimed by the advocates.

* the diet is extremely difficult, as most people find that a fruit diet is neither physically nor psychologically satisfying: hunger is frequent, and backsliding and binge eating are very common.

* fruitarians often display food-obsessive behavior. Take two pieces of bread, give one to an anorexic, and another to a fruitarian. The anorexic thinks, "I can't eat this bread, it will create fat"; the fruitarian may think in a similar matter: "I can't eat this bread" - with the reason(s) cited being one or more of the following delusions: a) the bread is cooked, hence toxic, b) the bread will produce mucus, which is the root of all disease, and will make me "impure", c) the bread contains protein (and/or starch), and all protein/starch is toxic and a horror. Here the point is the obsessive attitude toward food common to the anorexic and the fruitarian.

* very easy to overeat, and easy to fall into the nasty trap of sugar addiction. Sugar is well known for its ability to promote food cravings, which often leads to binge eating and/or overeating.

* modern, cultivated fruit is very high in sugar, higher in sugar than most wild, uncultivated fruits. A diet of only fruit can provide excess sugar intake, resulting in diabetes-like symptoms: sugar cravings, excessive urination, thirst, sugar highs/blues, fatigue. Excessive sugar, in the long run, may have a negative effect on the pancreas. (Fruitarians would be well advised to daily eat some dark, bitter, leafy greens - according to several herbal health systems, bitter greens help regulate sugar metabolism and reduce sugar cravings.)

* very socially isolating. This is very difficult for most people to handle; extroverts should not try to be fruitarians! The social isolation can promote a sense of psychological deprivation, which further encourages backsliding and binge eating. The social isolation and psychological deprivation can also warp your perception of eating; instead of a nourishing, nurturing experience, it becomes an exercise in egoism (similar to the phony compassion/ego trap that so many ethical vegans fall into.) One may identify with the diet; it becomes a "badge" or "symbol" of your individuality - in other words, a projection of the ego, rather than a peaceful, nourishing experience.

* many fruitarians eventually give up the diet as it is too difficult to continue - one experiences burnout from the food obsessions, social isolation, psychological deprivation, frequent hunger. It's interesting that some untreated anorexics also eventually recover from anorexia nervosa for the same reasons. In practice there is little difference in avoiding eating because you fear getting fat, and eating an inadequate diet because you are afraid of cooked food, mucus or protein. One must be very careful to practice fruitarianism with a totally positive attitude, lest it become a diet motivated by an obsessive fear of cooked food, mucus, or protein; for when fruitarianism is characterized and motivated by obsessive fear, it becomes an actual eating disorder!

* light, airy mental feeling that some compare to a minor drug high, and others mistake it for some kind of spiritual feeling. Said light feeling does not compare to, and is not the same as, the secure, peaceful, blissful, loving feelings that one gets from meditation or other genuine spiritual practices. I speak from direct personal experience on this point, having experienced both kinds of feelings. (P.S. some anorexics report mental effects similar to those experienced by fruitarians; that is one reason anorexia is so hard to overcome.) Note also that the "light" or "euphoric" mental feeling reported by fruitarians (and those with anorexia) may in fact be a symptom of a zinc deficiency. Zinc supplements are sometimes used in therapy for anorexia. Similarly, the loss of libido reported by some fruitarians, may be another symptom of a zinc deficiency (zinc is scarce in vegan diets, particularly raw vegan diets).

* fruitarianism, especially the 100% fruit version, is a very purifying diet, on the physical level. However, it is my observation/opinion that extensive physical purification, without accompanying spiritual or ethical development, usually leads to mental and/or emotional problems. These problems can take many forms; a few examples (in my experience/opinion), are as follows. 1) The fruitarian who was obsessed with two things - food and his bowel movements - and who drank vinegar like it was water. 2) The fruitarian who left his wife, moved to South America and lived naked with his girlfriends on a mountain. 3) The zealot fruitarian(s) who attack all diets other than (their own) raw vegan, and whose dialog is filled with ego, anger, hate, and other negativity. A pure body is irrelevant when your heart and mind are full of the poisons of anger and negativity.

An Alternative: A Near Fruitarian Diet

A "near-fruitarian" diet is an alternative to consider, for those who insist on following a high % fruit diet. It may help you avoid some of the problems of a 75+% fruit diet, but, of course, it cannot be guaranteed, and one should keep sharp watch for problems on a near-fruitarian diet as well.

For purposes of discussion, such a diet is a raw vegan diet that is approximately 70% (or less) raw fruit, with emphasis on semi-sweet and (to the extent possible) neutral fruit.

And, the remainder of the diet consists of:

- dark leafy greens and other vegetables. Emphasis is on bitter greens, but should also eat astringent, pungent, salty tasting greens. According to several herbal health systems, such greens help regulate sugar metabolism and provide some protection from sugar addiction. They also provide chlorophyll and minerals, and provide tastes that are difficult to get in fruits (most of which are predominantly sweet or sour).

- It's also a good idea to regularly eat some ginger to promote the digestive fire. If you object to ginger, eat pungent greens instead: mustard, arugula, watercress.

- Sprouts, specifically almonds, sesame, sunflower, pumpkin, peanut, also flax. These provide fatty acids that are scarce in fruit (you do get tired of avocados if eaten daily). Green jelly coconuts are good also. Buckwheat, other sprouts are also OK but do not supply fatty acids.

Additional considerations:

- get vitamin B-12 from a reliable source (supplement)

- do something to avoid or counter stress and social isolation

- last but most important: make spiritual or ethical development a top priority, to reduce/avoid the potential mental and emotional problems that often occur.

American Standard Heating Pumps: Is it typical for it to "freeze" up in humid conditions?

The other day my unit quit pumping in cool air, but after letting it sit for a few hours it came back on. Is this normal? It was humid out (monsoon season in Arizona) but not set unresonably cold (70 degrees).|||If your unit is freezing up it's low on freon.|||Sounds like your filter needs replaced or cleaned. Another reason that comes to mind is if your evaporator coil (inside) is dirty.

Either of these two areas could produce the conditions you spoke of in your question. There could be other reasons too but they are rare.|||Your unit is freezing up do to low on refrigerant. You have a leak somplace which will need to be repaired or you will be adding refrigerant on a regular basis|||To simply answer you question, yes. However there is a reason it happened and very simple ways to prevent it from freezing in the future. A heat pump is only good for about a 30 degree difference in outside to inside temps. Your house and all of its insulation play a part in keeping you cool. With outside temps high, and high humidity, you asked too much from your unit. The coils got so cold, ice formed on them. This ice prevented your unit from properly exchanging heat and thus the system shut down. Letting it sit allowed the ice to melt and come back online properly. In the future, set your inside temp around 72-75 or higher, and use ceiling fans to help cool your house. Clean filters and a properly maintained heat pump will help out as well.

Why, should we use Standard American English and what are the characteristics of the audience?

Why, should we use Standard American English and what are the characteristics of the audience? How do all these elements of (the writer, audience, topic, context, etc.) interplay?

|||Try to read some of these questions around here. That should give you all the reason you need to use standard English instead of SMS-speak, Ebonics, Trailer-Talk, Celeb-babble, and any other pseudo-English variant.

Why was the american standard of measurment created when the metric system is internationally used?

SAE is fading away in favor of Metric|||The basic units of measurement in the US came from Britain, which used the imperial, or Feet and inches system. Only France and some other European countries used metrics, mainly because Britain and the Europeans were always at war.

Most Countries are now converting to the metric system, as it is easier and quicker to use. Even Britain is going metric.

The USA is the last major country using the imperial system, and it is costing them dearly in export income.

As an extra bit of info, the Concord airliner was constructed using both the metric and imperial systems because the construction was shared between England and France. That meant that it depended on what maintenance was required decided where the repairs were done.|||The 'American' standard system was started in England several hundred years ago, by a king of england, and migrated to America. Not sure when the metric system was considered standardized over many countries, but it was way later then that.

And I remember 15 or 20 years ago everybody said the US was going to convert completely to the metric system. A lot of talk, but not a thing was changed. S.A.E. is alive, and quite well !!!|||This is one of the biggest causes of confusion in industry. Many countries have converted to the Metric system, invented in France, while most english speaking countries stuck to the English system.

The biggest cause of confusion is the fact the Americans spell all metric measurements incorrectly, so the rest of the world doesn't know what they are talking about. A Meter is a measuring instrument, not a unit of length, which is the Metre. The same is that capacity is measured in Liters, instead of the correct litres

How much of an influence do you think the media has on the American standard of beauty?

It was in control , but it's influence is lessening each day as people start to think for themselves.

%26gt;?%26lt;|||The media has influenced young girls that you're only pretty skinny, light skinned, and long hair. The media has part of a lot things because they aren't nothing but instigaters who say things about everybody such as the racial stereotypes. It is depressing and stupid to see such a thing.|||A lot, I guess, but it's up to the men and women themselves to decide what's beautiful and what's not. No one in the media is saying "YOU HAVE TO LOOK LIKE THIS TO BE BEAUTIFUL"|||A whole lot. Frankly, my definition of beauty is very different from the mainstream. About how others find the standard American accent to sound?

I've heard that to people of other countries, we sound like the stereotypical 1800's texan redneck. Is that true?! If so I'm going to cut out my tongue!|||Honestly, you'd think it if you listened to some British tv productions. I find the English guy playing the random American often has a thoroughly Texan accent. The only time I ever heard a Texas accent that strong was from a Norwegian guy who learned it in college and thought it was hilarious!

When I lived in France they distinguished between two accents: New York and California.

In French-speaking Africa, when people would imitate Americans they just mumbled like their mouths were full of marbles.|||Nasally and high pitched, most American accents sound like the teacher from Charley Brown Wah Wa Whah. A good example how Americans accentually sound is to us is like how Fran Drescher or Lina Lamont (female) Slim Pickins or Don Knotts (male). Then put it back to cool,auto,and 75.

If it starts cooling again it was froze up.Dirty filter or coil,and low refrigerant charge will all cause this.

Try it.Good luck.

What is the American Standard Code for Information Interchange?

ASCII. The organization that determines how information is translated into data for use in computers. For example, they developed standard tables that convert letter, number and punctuation characters in a languae set into computer key codes.|||That would be good old ASCII, or one of the older character encoding schemes. It simply maps characters you type on your keyboard (like, the space bar) with numbers (like 32 decimal for space bar) so they can be stored and manipulated internally by the computer...

American Standard Freedoom 80 furnace starts to run, then stops?

I have a 2 year old freedom 80 furnace. never had a problem until today. It starts to run for about 30 seconds. I hear burner start to ignite then shut off. P.S. It would be a good time for a full service and clean while the tech is there. Does anyone else have this problem with American Standard Champion toilets?

This is the toilet that claims it can flush 2 dozen golf balls. The problem about this toilet is that you have to hold the handle half way downward for the toilet to flush properly. Because if you try pushing the handle all the way down, then only a partial amount of water gets flushed down the toilet, losing a lot of its flushing power. I had a plumber come by to check it, he said that this is how this toilet is made and recommended getting a Toto toilet. Is there really nothing that can be done to fix this?|||All toilets have problems. This one is a chronic problem. Most complaints are that it wastes water which leaks into the bowl past a troublesome seal and is very difficult to fix. And parts are not readily available.

The idea is great, a novel flushing mechanism that can flush a pile of golf balls. When it works right.

Unfortunately, for those of us who just need to flush normal "stuff", a few kinks need to be worked out.

Where is the thermostat on the American Standard Furnace?

is there a seperate thermostat on the furnace itself?|||The furnace is on the wall and cotrols it from there. If its not doing anything, go look at the furnace and make sure that all the panels are in place. There is a safety switch that will not let it run if a panel comes loose. There is also a light switch near it that is a power disconnect. They get turned off alot of the time by people thinking its a light switch. Hopefully its one of those two things and you wont have to call a tech.|||No, there isn't. All you can do from the furnace itself is shut it off. If you are having problems with your furnace I would suggest calling a heating and cooling company.

If you were to choose between the metric and American Standard systems of measurement for future generations?

which one would you choose?|||of course metric.

Sad part is that the last generation screwed us over. If the US would have converted to the metric system in the 1970's, everyone would be use to it by now, and no one under 40 would have even heard of the English system.|||Metric system hands down. EVERYTHING in the metric system is based on ten, and it is much more intuitive than the US Imperial system. For instance, the kilometer is 1000 meters while the mile is 5280 feet? Imperial system is much more confusing and has to be memorized with unique amounts for each type of measurement, while in the metric system, every type of measurement is based on powers of ten. You just have to learn the rule.|||Metric is far more intuitive and convenient, and it makes way more sense than the English system. However, a full switch to metric in countries that don't use it is too impractical to actually happen. Despite the gigantic advantages of the metric over the English system, the vast majority of people aren't going to abandon what is already familiar to them for something so inessential.

Who or what is most responsible for lowering the American standard of living?

0bama. For crashing the economy with socialist policies, and creating a new normal in society. A normal where gas costs $4 a gallon and a milk and bread and other staples cost twice as much, but your paycheck (if you are lucky enough to have a job) stays the same unless you are a union crony.|||all socialist communistic federal politicians and subsquently all ignorant politicians, who are told one thing, and sign a bill into law. regardless of what is actually said and written.

most recently, changing the glass steagal laws, seemed to allow that banks can loan out money regardless of assets or none at all. thus the derivitive conspiracy has made the world 600 trillion and more by now in debt. thus people lose their homes because of foreclosure. thus Bush and Obama both bailed out banks and international enemies. by signing over trillions of tax dollars to save banks that shouldve gone bankrupt.

hence we have fiate money and inflationary qualitative easing by printing more money which causes food to triple in price because the value of the dollar is decreased. so when electricity doubles in price, its because General Electric conspires with the federal government to have coal burning plants closed while G.E. becomes a monopoly, also when tyson has lobbyists try to make laws that all farm animals should tagged with 10 to 15 dollar fee, while THEY themselves are given a minimum fee for lots of thousands of birds, its all evil.

the standard of living has been eroding away since before first bush became president, Kennedy was shot, and since all politicians would rather have their own bank accounts full and let the constituion go to crap.

in the end the United Nations Is the enemy of the constitution. agenda 21 makes it illegal to grow your own food. it also makes it a criminal act for an Amish man to seel whole unpasturized milk across state lines.

such an unlawful law should never be enforced by any military man who takes an oath to defend the constitution. yet, those who are in police/military uniforms that DO enforce illegal laws, THEY probably never did make such a constitutional oath.

people like this are enemies of Nation and the constitution, i pray for a similar nuremburg trial to come upon "them".

over all, american standards became this way because Atheists had "separation of church and state" laws passed but by purjury not by legal intent.

the current separation laws are HATE laws against christianity, and american standards have decreased everytime another person makes a covenant with evil and then becomes a non elected federal or state agent.

in essence, its every international bankster who conspires to destroy the united states financially, and every single politician who conspires with them.|||In my opinion, there are 3 big factors that are most to blame:

1. Economic globalization since the 1970s, with American business increasingly encountering tough foreign competition for markets (due to the recovery of Japanese %26amp; European industry from the damage done by WW II, and the entry of Japanese %26amp; Euro goods into "American" markets).

Then, after about 1985 and accelerating with the passage of NAFTA and GATT under the Clinton administration in the 1990s, "corporate flight" by US-based corporations to low-wage economies in the Third World, such as China, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam etc. All this has resulted in a hollowing out of US industry and the loss of millions of American jobs in heavy industry, which paid more than most jobs in the service sector.

For details, see Jeff Faux, "The Global Class War," on the main effects of globalization following the enactment of NAFTA.

2. Upper-class and corporate domination of the US government and US politics, which since the late 1970s and early 1980s has resulted in tax "reforms" that have benefited the top 1% of the population at the benefit of everyone in the bottom 99%.

At the same time, the increasing stranglehold of corporate American over the Republican Party and the "New Democrat" or Clinton wing of the Democratic Party has resulted in the de-regulation and non-regulation of the banking and financial sector of the economy -- creating the foundations for pure financial speculation in "subprime" mortgages and risky derivatives on Wall Street, and ultimately leading to the disastrous financial collapse of 2008 - a big setback for the American middle class

Source: "Winner Take All Politics," by political scientists Jacob Hacker and Paul Pierson.

3. Further lowering the US standard of living is the prolonged, mostly successful attack on labor unions and labor rights that the top management of corporate America has been mounting since the 1930s, with considerable help from the political far right.

Along with legal attacks on labor unions and illegal union-busting by corporations, there has been a massive automation and computerization of key American industries, shrinking the work force in previously high-wage, heavily unionized industries and forcing middle-class Americans with union jobs to seek lower-paying jobs in non-union settings.

For more details see Kim Phillips-Fein, "Invisible Hands: The Making of the Conservative Movement from the New Deal to Reagan," and Thomas Friedman, "The World Is Flat," about the decimation of the American labor movement by automation as well as economic globalization.|||The perpetuation and expansion of the Nanny State. Federal expenditures which are too much for the present tax base. The results being to make sure the middle class taxpayer pays a higher proportion of their income in taxation.

Government regulations which make it impossible for small businesses to be successful. An over-regulated business results in an under-performing business. This is a given.

Secondary causes include a lousy public education system, and a higher education system which is on the high road to failure. Also in the list would be the demands for ethnic distinction and the nonsense of multiculturalism and tribalism.|||The globalist agenda of world depopulation and forced slavery to the state. Will a Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar be good for playing at church?

I'm thinking about getting one and but I am not sure if it is a good fit for the type of music we sing. We sing in the style of Lincoln Brewster, Hillsong, Chris Tomlin and sometimes some gospelish things. thanks|||Yes. If you are not familiar with the tone of a Strat, it's got a super-clear sounding tone - almost acoustic-sounding, sometimes. It's an excellent instrument for "gentle" music like your church plays. It's the kind of guitar that will make you sound professional just because of the awesome tone. GET ONE. :D|||One of the most popular electric guitars of all times for any type of music. Evaluate the merits and weakness of the King James Version, the International Version, the American Standard V?

and also the revised standard version, explain your position.|||They are all filled with myths and perhaps a little history mixed in to make them seem true.|||King James Version - not exactly the best. They didn't have a full New Testament in Greek, so in order to get what they didn't have, they translated parts of the Latin Vulgate into Greek making parts of it a translation of a translation. In addition, it's written in Early Modern English (as opposed to Modern English) which makes it harder to read. Current printings of the King James Version on based on a 1787 reprint, rather than the original 1611 edition.

New International Version - not close to the Greek. I read Greek, and I have found places where additional material has been added that does not appear in the original Greek. Most of this is explanatory in nature, but that makes it misleading.

The New Revised Standard Version is in true Modern English (though politcal correctness has gotten a bit extreme with it). Both the Dead Sea Scrolls and Codex Sinaiticus (the oldest known Bible) were used in the translation placing it much closer to the original books, unlike the KJV which uses much later manuscripts.|||THe great and damming similarity they all share is teh fact that they are a result of a sixteenth century edit of the Torah done by an english king under the auspices of the catholic church in order to reinforce their own power structure|||@mortoo: King James was Scottish. Should i get an American Standard or American Special Telecaster?

I have been saving up for quite a while so money isn't really an issue i can afford both, this will be my first like, real guitar because i have only had a squier strat before. I love the look/sound of telecasters but i wanted to add a neck humbucker and change the pick guard, but someone told me that would be stupid to do on such an expensive guitar. Now i'm confused.|||Hello there,

Both the American Standard and the American Special Telecaster are excellent guitars.

If you want a humbucker in the neck position, get a model that has that. It is not a simple matter to change the pickups on a Tele. On your Strat, the pickup cavities are large enough to put humbuckers in the neck or bridge position. With the Tele, the pickup cavity is cut small to fit only a single coil. So to change the pickup, you will need to have the cavity cut larger. That will require a different pickguard. Simpler and cheaper to buy a model that has a humbucker in the neck position.

I cannot see buying an American Special with plans to swap out the pickups. The American Special is a regular Tele with Texas Special pickups. You pay extra to get those pickups. Otherwise the guitar is the same. If you don't want Texas Special pickups, get a different guitar.

By the way, I trust you realize the Telecaster has a fixed bridge. Your Squier Strat has a tremolo bridge. So you will not have a whammy bar with a Tele.

Why are you buying an American Standard or am American Special if you do not like the pickups. That does not make a lot of sense to me.

I consider the Squier Strat to be a real guitar. Squier has a lot of models and the quality varies. However, the Squier Standard, Deluxe, Vintage Modified and Classic Vibe are all very good guitars. I think the Classic Vibe is the best buy on a dollar per dollar basis of any Strat on the market. I have some 80s vintage Squier Strats that are higher quality and better players than the new MIM Fender Standard Strat.

Later,

What is the difference between Fender's AMERICAN Standard Strat and just the Standard Strat.?

Besides where it is made.|||The American Strat is assembled with higher quality electronics and wood. The pickups are also higher end (the standard's are pretty weak). The tremolo is also a higher end version.|||It assembled in the USA and not Mexico is about the only difference. The third burner on my American Standard freedom 80 two stage furnace won't light?

Flow to the gas valve is 6.7wc. This is a freedom 80 two stage furnace. Could it be I'm not getting enough pressure to the manifold for the third burner to light? Is there a way to increase the pressure at the valve? If yes could you please explain the adjustment I need to make? If gas pressure isn't the problem. What else could it be? Thank you!|||the old timer actually had a true answer, a spider web can cause this but before starting out on a possible wild goose chase you should pull the burners out and clean the ends. I work on a sh!t ton of A. Standard units and I can tell you that if you have LP gas the burners definitely need cleaned. You'll need a 5/16 nut driver to remove the top holding plate that rests across the burners, when taking it out be careful with the ignitor if its attached to it, and the burners simply pop right out one at a time, use a wire brush on the ends, usually their will be some crap plugged carry over chanels or what looks like the small slots on the ends of the burners, clean those out with a tiny rod, perhaps a paper clip or something of that size.

6.7 " wc incoming is good for natural gas but low for LP, outlest pressure for N. gas = 3.5, LP close to 11, you may only see something around 9 or 10, thats still alright and not the problem.|||The orifice may be restricted. With the unit off use a bent paper clip to clear it.

Does outsourcing help the American standard of living?

When computers first came out, they were all made in the USA and they cost thousands of dollars

Eventually computer manufacturing was moved overseas, and that brought the price of computers down, to where everyone could afford them

Now that everyone can afford computers, productivity in America has greatly improved, to the point where most Americans couldn't even function or earn a living without a computer

If computers were never outsourced, most would still never afford them

Is this just one of many examples of how outsourcing benefits America ?|||Computers became affordable when the market expanded and competition brought the price down and quality up. Other countries began competing in the market and exporting to America forcing American brands to lower price and increase speed, safety, etc. It had little to do with outsourcing.|||Depends upon which American you are ruminating...rich folks do great by outsourcing our jobs...plus, they get tax cuts to ship our jobs out...

All of the cheap crap in the world won't do any good, if no one makes enough in wages to purchase said crap...|||Does outsourcing help the American standard of living?

Difference between metric and american standard tools? mechanic?

I bought a caftsman toold set that inclusdes both metric and standard tools, whats the point to this? im in usa califonia.|||Trust me, you will use the metric tools if you own a car made from the 90's on up to a new one no matter where it is made.|||Asian and Europeans cars are metrics.

American are standards|||Sure wish it was that easy James H. I wouldn't have to buy so many tools. American autos use 95% metric.|||They are made to fit different sized fasteners. Most everything (automotive) since 1988 uses metrics. Many non-automotive applications utilize the SAE-sized nuts/bolts.

You'll find a use for both sizes, no doubt.|||Welcome to the new age of autos. As for American cars using only Standard sizes , they began using metric on North American cars in the mid 80`s ie: 13 mm = 1/2" , 19 mm = 3/4" . You will find more and more cars using metric. Some things don`t change (yet) wheel nuts and studs , the rims sizes are the same but the width is in metric , and if you encounter Torx bolts/screws they are metric. And those of you that think only imports use metric . Try working on some of the more popular GM`s and Fords , when the only wrench that fits is an 18mm or a 7mm (dash screws) . Gm also uses odd sizes like 15 , 16 , 20 , and 23 when there is no " standard " equivalent " . 14=9/16 , 17=5/8 , 19=3/4, 21=7/8 Unless you have been living in your own little world for the past 25 years most of the major manufacturers have been converting to metric. Just be gratefull you have not had to deal with somthing as bacwards as B.N.S. British National Standard. Where you have things like 19/32nd`s and 27/64ths for regular sizes.|||Metric tools are measured in milimeters (mm). Standard Tools are measured in fractions of inches. To be able to work on cars you need both sets because of the variety of bolt and nut size. If you use the wrong size you will round the heads off on the bolts.|||Now days everything is metric as far as bolts go..Not just import cars anymore. But you did OK buying the complete kit. Because depending on the age of the vehicle you may still need standard items. About 1983-1984 American built vehicles actually used both standard and metric bolts on same vehicle...very upsetting|||Metric and standard are different sizes.

Foreign cars use metric, american cars use standard.

dont try to mix.. you end up damaging your nuts and bolts..

And your tools.

Finding American Standard shower valve screws/other parts?

I recently had to replace the shower valves and handles in my shower. It was a three-handle (hot, cold, diverter) type from American Standard. I was able to get the valves and handles at a local plumbers supply store, but I can't get the screws to hold the handles onto the valves anywhere.

Does American Standard have an online catalog or any other way to find their parts?|||One would think that simply going to the American Standard web site would work. But; not so good. How much could I fetch for a used Fender American Standard Strat?

I have only played it a few times and has two minor p.aint scratches that i'm looking to get repaired|||Hello there,

The price of course depends on the year, the features, the body color, maple or rosewood fretboard and most of all the condition. I looked at the lowest recent sales from eBay to give you an idea of the bottom line to realistically expect. Those ran from $399 (with free shipping and up. Here are some examples of the lower sales prices.

$395 plus shipping:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Fender-Rare-1991-Ame鈥?/a>

$482 plus shipping:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Fender-American-Stan鈥?/a>

$510 plus shipping:

http://cgi.ebay.com/1996-Fender-Stratoca鈥?/a>

Those are the American Strats that brought the least in the recent sales. You can look around at the other closed sales to find a guitar that matches yours more closely to get a better idea of the price to expect.

Later,|||Even with the paint scratches you can ask $800, maybe as high as $900 depending on the year and pick-ups. Don't try to sell it at a music store though, they will not give you anywhere near that amount because that is what they will sell it for, they have to make a profit. Check out used prices on Guitar Center's web-site to give yourself an idea of what to ask, then post it on a classifieds site like craigslist with lots of pics.|||Depends on the condition and how good it still sounds. You could possibly get someone to buy it for $1,000, but since it's used, it's unlikely. New Fender Strats run at about $1,700 or $1,800 so don't expect anything over 1 grand for a used one.|||I'd ask at least $899. Depends on the pickups, year, how old it is etc.

Is it wrong to think that the standard American is white?

Because the Founding Fathers surely thought so. If it is wrong, then wouldn't it be just as wrong for the Japanese to think that the standard Japanese citizen is Japanese?|||Most advocates of multiculturalism think it's wrong to force it on predominately non white countries, and yet somehow essential for predominately white countries. Or English, or Dutch, or Irish... But not strictly white. Besides diversity is what makes us so interesting and dynamic.|||I would guess in those days, there was no such thing as diversity training. People weren't as educated in other cultures or cultures that to them appeared inferior because they didn't understand their language or their ways. There is no such thing as a standard American.|||i think our picture of the standard American is probably tied to who you're around for the most part. if there is nothing but white people for miles around you, than it's probably normal to think that. nothing but black people miles around, than it's probably normal to envision that. *shrug*

anyhow... there is no "Standard" American.. that's why the 'one size fits all' types of policies are always doomed from the start|||Yes, but its getting to be all races and I think most people in the World would like to live in America- So in 25 years or so- it won't be mostly white- it will be more Muslim Islamics- they have 7 babies to whites 1.|||Yes, that is wrong. Our founding fathers also had slaves, and were around in a time when native americans, blacks, and practically anyone that looked different then them was thought of as inferior. And there is no "standard" white American because that would imply that you have to meet the requirement of skin color to be considered as a citizen, and that is backwards, ignorant, and prejudicial thinking.|||You do realize that "Japanese" is a nationality and, therefore, analogous to "American" rather than "white," don't you? Race is one thing; nationality is another.

I have a 20yr american standard oil furnace I have been noticing on bad windy days it shut off?

On a daily basis it's okay but during winter stormy days or other times where we get windy weather conditions the burner goes off and i need to reset a few times. I do routine maintenance on the system since it's used year run because it supplies us the hot water too. I'm not too familiar with the working of the furnace and was just curious to know if this was a normal reaction or do i need to get a contractor? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks|||If it's only a problem on windy days I'd suspect you're getting a wind-induced downdraft. Some sort of chimney cap might be in order.

If this is a new problem, then there may also be a contributing factor: the chimney needs cleaning or the burner needs adjusting.|||I had much the same problem on windy days the unit would cycle and fail to light. The problem was solved with a guard to prevent the wind from blowing in the wrong vent during the windy days. Modern furnaces have air pressure sensors that compare the intake and exhaust pressures and if they are not correct, the furnace will not operate. My furnace has the 2 vents about 3 ' apart and they are 2" PVC so the solution was a "T" on them to prevent the wind blowing in the furnace. Have a service done on your furnace and get a wind cap installed, the correct air flow is critical.|||it sounds like your furnace is ok - and usually older ones are way more reliable for alot of years - i would say it is just a wind problem - you can compensate 2 ways - install a wind gaurd at the bottom of wind sourse - also the down draft - comming down the fluke may be to blame - so other then that should be ok

What is the American Standard of Living?

I hear people use this term a lot, but I don't know what it means.|||It means you are free to work for wealth or prosperity and own property to your appropriate income level without the fear that the government will confiscate your property without legal cause based upon our Constitution. The Constitution defined it as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.|||Standard of living is a relative term describing the luxuries a person enjoys due to the ratio of his wage to the cost of living in the area of said person's residence. An example of an "American" standard of living might be Joe Blow works a 40 hour week building widgets for $15/hour, and has a mortgage, two car loans, high speed internet, big screen TV with satellite, and goes bowling every Wednesday night while his wife gets her nails done down at the corner beauty parlor, and the kids play Uncharted 2 on their PS3. Meanwhile, in China there is a worker that builds PS3s at a factory, 60 hour week, making $1.20/hour, while his wife and one kid clean up the grass hut and skin rabbits for supper. That being an example of the "Chinese standard of living".|||A level of material comfort as measured by the goods, services, and luxuries available to an individual, group, or nation. For instance, the Average American family has a home, car, multiple TV's, cellphones, a large wardrobe, clean running water, food, medicine etc.

How long before American standard of healthcare mirrors that of the Castro regime in Cuba?

If it stands the court test, (which it won't) 4 years|||Canada and western Europe are better standards of comparison to the USA: they have similar level of development; similar demographics, except they all have universal care. There's no reason we can't mirror our neighbor to the north where life expectancies are 2.3 years longer than the USA and health care costs are nearly $3400 lower per capita.

The fact is that in the USA we pay nearly *twice* what Europeans pay for health care, and we have both higher infant mortality and lower life expectancy than most European countries. According to David Frum (special assistant to president, 2001-2), between 2000 and 2007, the cost of the average insurance policy for a family of four doubled. Some folks blame our high costs on malpractice insurance. But the numbers don't support that. A recent CBO estimate http://cbo.gov/ftpdocs/106xx/doc10641/10鈥?/a> says malpractice reform might save half a percent of expenditures. Another estimate: including legal fees, insurance costs, and payouts, the cost of the suits comes to less than 1.5 percent of health-care spending. See http://www.insurance-reform.org/pr/AIRhe鈥?/a> and http://makethemaccountable.com/myth/Risi鈥?/a> Along those lines, it's interesting to note that a number of states already have "caps and tort reform" yet the insurance companies have not lowered the cost of malpractice insurance in those states. What's the difference between the Fender American Standard and the Fender American Deluxe stratocaster?

It does depend on the year because they do change the specs from year to year. It use to be that the deluxe version had an LSR Roller nut but they have since dropped that from the current version of the deluxe version. here's what the current specs are for an American Standard Strat

* Solid alder body (urethane finish)

* Modern C-shaped maple neck with rich, deep neck tint, glossed neck front with satin back

* 22 medium jumbo frets

* 3 hot American Strat single-coil pickups

* Delta-tone鈩?no-load circuit (includes high output bridge pickup and special no-load tone control for middle and bridge pickups)

* Bent steel Fender saddles

* Copper Infused Cast Strat庐 Bridge Block (steel with copper- 100% metal) for Increased Mass and Improved Tone

* Thinner undercoat for improved body resonance

* American 2-point trem

* Rosewood or maple fretboard

* Staggered machine heads

and here's the specs for a deluxe strat

* Premium contoured alder body

* Modern C neck shape with slick finish and hand-rolled edges

* 3 Fender SCN (Samarium Cobalt Noiseless) pickups

* 5-way pickup selector

* S-1 switching system

* Polished chrome hardware

* String-thru-body bridge with polished stainless steel saddles

* Locking Fender tuners

* 22 medium-jumbo frets

* Schaller strap-lock ready

In my opinion the biggest differences that are going to make a difference are the locking tuners (for better tuning stability), the S-1 switching system, the Noiseless pickups, and the hand rolled edges on the neck. Hope this helps!

Does anyone know if American Standard recommends plumbers?

i need a plumber to fix leaking, that has been fixed multiple times, american standard is where i got the appliances, and i would like to know if they have any plumbers i could hire to finally stop the leaking|||I've heard this before, when I went to put in a new water heater a few times and had a hard time believing that folks would actually pay a plumber for a repair job when it still leaks. If you've had "plumbers", licensed plumbers out to do repairs and they haven't taken care of the problems, then call the local plumber's union. There should be a number in the yellow pages of your phone book. You should also call the local office of your Better Business Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce. Someone of these agencies will get you some decent help.|||Sometimes it's more beneficial to get a good handyman who knows what they are doing.

In Australia most plumbers get their trade licence and learn their trade in a pub whilst drunk...so yeah, I am not surprised that your appliance is still leaking.

I'm a builder, and whilst it is illegal for me to do plumbing work, I always did my own on my jobs, and of course they were always done properly and I had no problems.

So if you want a leaky and expensive job, call a plumber, if not, then call a good handyman.

What should I purchase a Lennox or American Standard A/C unit?

I would go with the Lennox. It will usually last about 15 to 20 years at best.|||If price is no object I would buy the lennox; its a quality product. However, an American standand unit will work just as well and you can take a min-vacation on the savings. your choice....

What should I get the Epiphone Casino inspired by John Lennon or the Fender American Standard Stratocaster?

I can't decide between these two and I would like your reason why I should get. And what amp should i get with it. I like classic rock.|||Hello there,

Both the Casino and the Strat are great guitars. But they are quite different. The difference is drastic. The Casino is a hollow body guitar with 2 humbucking pickups. It has a fairly large body. It has a Gibson scale neck, that is, 24 3/4 inches. There are not a lot of options available, and therefore this guitar is a very distinctive sound.

The Strat comes in various pickup configurations. The classic version is 3 single coil pickups. It is a solid alder (usually) body guitar. The neck is maple with either a rosewood or maple fretboard (each sounds different). Generally the Strat comes with a vintage synchronized tremolo bridge. But there are fixed bridge and Floyd Rose tremolo bridge versions available. There are so many options available on the Strat, that it can have many different sounds.

Because the body shape, weight and balance is so different between the Casino and the Strat, you need to decide which is a more comfortable fit with your playing style. The tones are so different, you need to decide with tone is the one you want. The necks are so different you need to decide which profile, radius, and scale is most comfortable in your hands. You need to decide whether you need a tremolo bridge or not. How I answer all those questions has no bearing what so ever to you. You need to decide those things.

Amp? Most beginners under estimate the importance of the amp and speakers in the quality of the sound. A great guitar played through a lousy amp or lousy speakers will sound lousy. A mediocre guitar played through a good amp and good speakers will sound decent. You need a good amp. Are you prepared to do the care and maintenance a tube amp requires? If you expect to just flip the switch and start playing, you need a solid state amp. You need to decide if you are up to the work of caring for a tube amp. If not, then go with solid state. You need to decide that basic question before you can seriously consider what brand and model amp.

Later,|||Whats your price range? And both of those guitar will sound pretty different from each other, considering the Strat is a solidbody with singlecoils and the Epi is a hollowbody with P-90's.

For the Epi, think of (of couse) the Beatles and Noel Gallagher (SP?)

For the Strat, think Buddy Guy, Buddy Holly, and Mark Knopfler.

And if you can, try them out if you near a music store.

And since I believe you may want a tube amp, go for one of these:
