Can the English pound character be created on a standard American keyboard?

Often I have found a need to use the English pound sterling (crazy el with a dash thriugh it). Can it be created on a standar American keyboard outside of a word processor and if so how? Is a simole widget allowing creation of such special characters available?|||You do not need a new keyboard. You just need to use the international keyboard layout. This layout allows you to type international characters by pressing the alt key, such as 茅, 帽, 隆, and yes, the english pound 拢.

To enable the international keyboard, follow the directions at Microsoft's knoweldgebase here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306560

Once you have the international keyboard enabled, you can type international characters either via alt-%26lt;key%26gt; or shift-alt-%26lt;key%26gt;, or by pressing one ' followed by a letter for an accented character, ~ and a letter for a tilde'd character, " followed by a letter for two dots above the character, etc. For example, 茅 is created either by ' followed by e, or by 茅 alt-e. 眉 is either " followed by u, or alt-y (because alt-u is 煤)

The pound character (拢) is created via alt-shift-4.

(Note that with the international keyboard selected, you will need to push the spacebar after the now-special characters ', ", ~, or `.)

An alternative way of doing this as a one-time only thing (if you do not frequently type international characters) is by using the alt-numpad codes. You do not need to enable anything special. Simply hold the alt key while pressing 0163 on the numeric keypad, and the pound sign should show up. Of course, if you have a laptop computer without a numeric keypad, this is rather more difficult). You can find a list of all the alt-numpad codes via a google search for alt-code or alt-numpad.|||On a Windows computer, you can type it by holding down the ALT key and typing 0163 on the keypad.

Personally, I usually find it easier just to copy one from somewhere and hit paste: 拢.

Some programs have and "Insert Symbol" function, but it varies from program to program.

There's also the Character Map Program (under Accessories-%26gt;System Tools) which lets you pick from all the available characters.|||yes, it can be. Just press alt + 0163, using the numeric keypad on your keyboard, not the numbers up at the top. Here are some other keyboard shortcuts:
