How do I acquire the standard American accent?

I'm a learner of English as a second language, and I'd like to speak English like a native American speaker. Is this possible?

I know there is no single American accent, but many. However I've been told the accent of the midwestern United States is considered by most as the standard. (Is this true?).

What advice (or resource to recommend) do you have for someone like me, a foreign learner, wanting to speak English like a native speaker?

Or is it simply impossible?

P.S. I heard there are special schools (instructors?) in Hollywood where actors and other celebrities go to learn the American accent. Know any such institutions?|||Use this site:

It really helped my friend who moved here from Russia.|||your accent/lisp is something that makes you special. dont try to change it or get rid of it.|||you can almost never get rid of your accent. or gain one.|||watch a lot of old movies, and copy the people speaking ,that should help.|||why would you want to? be you, man...|||in my experience, most dialects of american english are regarded by their users as "standard"- you can get them to admit, sometimes, that midwest "neutral" accent is standard.

I am not aware of any specific school for american accents, but immersion is always the best way to learn any language- move to the midwest, and in a few months- you speak like a native.|||I think that is very hard but try to speak and hear Talk a lot with people that born in US and the best english is in the northeast of the country (Boston,New York,Penn.etc.) because is more closer to the original english avoid places for learn like the south and the sotheast because is another kind of accent there avoid slangs and I know that exist very good schools for learn and almost include many hours of coversation .|||no I dont.but you actualy must live in US|||Go for the new england accent. Girls like it the best|||It's possible, but difficult. The best advice I've seen is to immerse yourself in American films and television, trying to mimic the speech patterns used there. I've seen that work incredibly well. I have Swedish relatives who speak English as if they were native Californians due to their film and TV watching.|||You must listen to Rush Limbaugh on the radio three hours each day. Repeat what he says as exactly as you can. This will slowly improve your accent and reprogram you to a better political orientation. Best wishes.|||I think mid-westerners speak funny...but I am from Jersey...what do i know?|||cuss... a lot.
