I have a three ton system now, but it doesn't keep the house cool, on a day of 106 deg.the house well only be 85 deg. and it well run with out stoping all day and half the night. the Trane man and the American standard man said with 3.5 ton variable speed air handlers and a 15 seer out side unit ,it would heat and cool the house faster and better, and cheaper pg%26amp;e bills. witch of these units are the better? I think they are bouth made at the same factory. The bids are cheaper for the American standard than the Trane, for the same work to be done, witch is the better deal? My house is about 1950sf. well 3.5 ton unit do.
. The system in there now is 17 years old,and is about seer 6 or7.|||I'd agree with Redbird. The main consideration is whether or not the A/C contractors did a proper load configuration in their computer software. Your climate, how much insulation you have in your walls and ceiling, how many square of windows and doors and which direction they face, how much shade you have in the summer, etc. all come into play in figuring the load. If it's undersized it will struggle in extreme temperatures - either hot or cold -- and if it's over sized it will satisfy the thermostat so quickly the humidity level will be too high in your house. So the calculation is critical to insure the proper sized unit is installed. My house in new and very well insulated, has 1716 s.f. of living, and has a 3.5 ton unit. So I'd be guessing the 4 ton myself. The 15 seer is very good and both units are quality units. I've always used Trane but that is primarily because they make them about 30 miles from where I live in east Texas and I know people that work there. Good luck.|||I feel better about you getting a 4 ton, unless your home is insulated really well. Remember though that too much tonnage is not a good thing. If both contractors did a heat load calculation and came up with 3.5 ton, then you are ok. As far as Trane vs. American Standard: American Standard is the parent company of Trane and it is true that they are basically the same unit all around. So, go for the one that is offering the best dollar amount to install. You will get the same warranty from either unit.
