What do you think about the New American Standard Version?

My Aunt recommends this translation, I'm not familiar with the New American Standard Version. Being Catholic I usually use Catholic translations, but I also use Protestant translation as well. Is This a good translation?

It is consistently respected and widely recommended for its accuracy and faithfulness.

The NAS was updated in 1995 or 1996 and reads much better than it did in its original version. Often it is referred to as the NASU (Update), where the original version was NASB (Bible).





The term "wooden" was coined to describe how the old NASB read. That term is often mistakenly applied, in my opinion, to NASU.





According to Amazon reading statistics, the NASU reads at a higher grade level that many Bibles that use a degree of paraphrasing. That is no surprise, because the NAS retains the longer sentences of the original languages, doesn't replace metaphors with plain statements, and doesn't simplify the text when it gets complicated.





Longer sentences help you see where thoughts are continuous and connected. Metaphors are beautiful to contemplate. And, I am generally opposed to simplification of the text, except for children, because it typically results in a loss of information.





Some people think that you should stick with a Catholic translation. I think you can respect Catholic teaching by avoiding translations which they have officially disapproved, e.g. NRSV. But I don't believe that is the case with the NAS, otherwise Father Neuhaus would have mentioned it.





I'm a big fan of owning several translations. Get an NAS and have fun reading with your Aunt!!





God Bless.|||It's supposed to be very accurate. But it's not a lot of fun to read. Being very literal, some of the meanings are hard for an inexperienced reader to grasp, and it doesn't exactly flow. Great for study, not for church. You might want to keep a New American Bible on hand and compare if there are problems. The New Revised Standard Version is also recommended for accuracy, and is easier on the ears.|||Well, it's good in it's niche.

Also, the NASB does not include the entire Roman Catholic canon. IF the "pros" of a very literal translation are what you want, then the NASB is an excellent bible. The most literal modern Roman Catholic translation is the RSV-CE.

The farther you go back, and get closer to the original, the more authentic the text will be.





Sorta kills the notion of a "perfect" Greek text.|||It's a good translation. In fact, it's the one I was reading when I came to personal faith in Jesus Christ 40 years ago.





P.S. A good, Catholic-approved translation is the New American Bible (sounds like the same name, but without "Standard").|||My opinion is there are two great important points in the Gospel of John...





first point: The prince of this world in John 14, 30


Many Bibles believe the prince of this world is wrong because he is a man of this world. We know the doctor Luke wrote a Great gospel by the Holy Spirit and now he is in Heaven.


The prince of this world has no power on Jesus while Pilatus had power on Jesus. Why?...


My opinion is only the same Jesus, maybe Christ..., cannot have the power on Jesus...





Conversation between the Mother and Jesus in John 2, 1..5


It seems a not good conversation so many Bibles have a particular translation.


it's really important because this conversation can be caused from our original sin.


Apocalypse 12, 1..2 can be pertaining to it...|||It is a very good translation, although if you are Catholic you might want to consider the New Jerusalem Bible. It is excellent and has the benefit of including the Deuterocanonical books.|||I always read The New American Bible. I do not read any protestants bible not all the books are in them I stay away.|||I'm not familiar with this translation you can find it at http://www.biblegateway.com though if you want to read it.|||The best and most reliable Protestant version is th NRSV New Revised Standard Version.|||I read it through once years ago but really don't remember much about it. Now I prefer the King James or New King James.|||Use whatever load of old cobblers that fits your blinkered view of the world.
